How to use Italki effectively and make the most of every lesson

Are you eager to use Italki to improve your Spanish or any other language but you are not sure where to start? There is no doubt that this platform offers a wide range of language practice and learning opportunities. However, to make the most of it during your learning process, it’s important to know how to use Italki effectively.

In this guide, I will share some tips on how to use Italki strategically so you can make the most of each lesson you take. By following these tips and tricks, you will be well on your way to mastering the language in no time.

Let’s go!

Set clear goals

When learning how to use Italki effectively, setting clear learning goals is crucial. Before your first lesson, take the time to define your objectives.

Are you learning your target language for travel, work, or simply for personal enjoyment? Would you like to focus on conversational skills, grammar, or vocabulary?

Not only having a clear understanding of your goals can help you choose the right teacher depending on your goals, but also you give yourself something to work towards and help keep yourself motivated.

Regarding this, make sure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (this is known as the SMART model).

For example, instead of saying “I want to learn Spanish,” a SMART goal would be “I want to be able to hold a conversation in Spanish with a native speaker within six months.”

Choose the right teacher

One of the key factors in learning how to use Italki effectively is finding the right teacher. Here are some reasons why:

  • They can provide you with personalized instruction tailored to your specific learning needs and goals.
  • A good teacher can identify areas where you need to improve and provide you with guidance on how to improve those areas.
  • Your teacher can help you stay motivated and engaged in your language learning journey.

Since there are a lot of professional teachers and community tutors available out there, I wrote a guide on how to find a good teacher on Italki. Hopefully you will find it useful!

Prepare for your lessons

Preparing for your lessons can help you get the most out of your time with your teacher. Make a list of topics or questions you want to cover in advance, and be ready to take notes during your lesson.

You may also want to review any homework or assignments your teacher has given you before your next lesson.

How to study before the lesson?

To make the most of your Italki lesson, it’s important to prepare beforehand. Here are some tips to help you study before your lesson:

Review previous lessons

If you’ve had previous lessons with your Italki teacher, review the materials and notes from those lessons before your next one. This can help reinforce what you’ve learned and prepare you for the next lesson.

Set learning goals

Before each lesson, set specific learning goals based on what you want to achieve. For example, if you’re struggling with verb conjugations, make that your focus for the lesson.

Practice vocabulary

Practice new vocabulary words and phrases before your lesson to help you better understand the material and communicate more effectively.

Use online resources

There are many online resources available to help you practice your Spanish skills, such as language learning apps, online quizzes, and videos. Use these resources to supplement your learning before your Italki lesson.

What to do during the lesson?

During your Italki lesson, it’s important to stay focused and engaged. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your lesson:

Take notes

Take notes during the lesson to help you remember new vocabulary, grammar rules, and other important information.

Ask questions

Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher questions if you don’t understand something. Asking questions can help clarify misunderstandings and improve your understanding of the material.

Practice speaking

Use your Italki lesson as an opportunity to practice speaking Spanish. Don’t worry about making mistakes; focus on communicating as effectively as possible.

Get feedback

Ask your teacher for feedback on your speaking and other language skills. This can help you identify areas where you need to improve and make adjustments to your learning strategy.

How to study after the lesson and review what you learned?

After your Italki lesson, it’s important to review what you’ve learned and continue practicing your language skills.

Here are some tips to help you study after your lesson:

Review your notes

Reviewing your notes after a language lesson is important because it helps reinforce what you’ve learned and solidify the information in your memory.

By doing this, you can better remember new vocabulary words, grammar rules, and other important language concepts.

Additionally, reviewing your notes can help you identify areas where you may need to focus more attention or ask your teacher for additional clarification.

Practice speaking

Practicing on your own after a language lesson is crucial to making the most of it because it allows you to apply what you’ve learned in a practical way.

Language learning is not a passive process, and simply attending lessons is not enough to become proficient in a new language. Regular practice outside of lessons is essential to internalize the new language concepts and improve your skills.

By doing so, you can solidify what you learned during the lesson, identify areas where you need more practice, and reinforce new vocabulary and grammar structures. Practicing on your own can also help you become more comfortable with the language and build your confidence in using it.

Supplement your Italki lessons

While Italki lessons are an excellent way to learn Spanish, it’s essential to use additional resources. This will help you reinforce what you’ve learned and develop a more comprehensive understanding of the language.

Here are some ideas on how to supplement your Italki lessons:

  • Use language learning apps. Apps like Duolingo, Busuu, Memrise, or Anki can help you practice vocabulary, grammar, and listening skills in your spare time.
  • Language exchanges. Look for languages exchanges groups because it is a great way to practice speaking and improve your listening skills.
  • Immerse yourself in Spanish media. Listen to podcasts, watch movies or TV shows, and read books or news articles in Spanish. This will help you develop your listening and reading comprehension skills while also exposing you to new vocabulary and colloquial expressions.

Set new learning goals

To truly master how to use Italki effectively, it’s important to regularly track your progress and adjust your approach as needed. Here are some tips for monitoring your progress and making necessary adjustments:

  • Set milestones. Break your overall goals into smaller, achievable milestones. This will help you stay motivated and provide you with a clear sense of progress.
  • Assess your progress regularly. After each lesson or at the end of each week, reflect on what you’ve learned and how well you’re meeting your milestones. This will help you identify any areas where you need to focus more attention or adjust your goals.
  • Seek feedback from your teacher. Ask your teacher for their assessment of your progress and any suggestions for improvement. They can provide valuable insights into your strengths and areas where you may need additional practice.

Be consistent and committed

Consistency is key when it comes to language learning. Try to schedule regular lessons with your teacher and set aside time each day for practice and review what you learn with them.

Even if you can only spare 15-30 minutes a day, consistent practice will help you make progress over time.

Here are some tips for staying consistent and committed to your language journey:

  • Create a study schedule. Establish a routine by setting aside specific times during the week for your Italki lessons and self-study. This will help you build a habit and make language learning a part of your daily life.
  • Prioritize your lessons. Treat your Italki lessons as an important commitment, just like a class or work meeting. Avoid canceling or rescheduling lessons unless absolutely necessary, as this can disrupt your progress.
  • Embrace challenges. Learning a new language is a complex process, and you’ll inevitably face challenges along the way. Instead of getting discouraged, embrace these challenges as opportunities to grow and improve.

How many Italki lessons per week

When deciding how many Italki lessons per week to take, it’s important to keep in mind a variety of factors such as your individual learning needs and goals, budget, availability and learning style.

The key is to find an approach that is sustainable and effective for your individual learning style and goals.

Here are some different options to consider:

One lesson per week

If you’re on a tight budget or have limited availability, taking one Italki lesson per week can still be an effective way to learn a language.

This option is best for you if you are self-motivated and can dedicate time outside of your lessons to practice and review by yourself.

Two lessons per week

Taking two Italki lessons per week can help you make faster progress in your language learning. This option might be the best for you if you are someone who has a bit more flexibility in your schedules and can still commit to regular practice outside of your lessons.

Three to four lessons per week

If you’re looking to make rapid progress in your language learning, taking three to four Italki lessons per week can be a good option.

If you have a bit more budget and availability, and are highly motivated to reach your language learning goals, this could be a good fit.

More than four lessons per week

There is no need to say that the more you practice, the faster you will learn the language. If you have the chance to book more than four lessons, go ahead! I am sure you will see incredible progress in no time.

However, I am aware this is not everyone’s reality but don’t worry about it because taking lessons on Italki is not the only way you can be in touch with your target language.
