Hey! I'm Carmen

Spanish as a foreign language teacher specializing in conversation and fluency

I help adults speak Spanish with more confidence, naturalness, and fluency through group conversation classes focused on real-life communication, culture, and step-by-step learning.

I believe that learning a language isn’t just about studying grammar or memorizing vocabulary. For me, learning a language means learning to connect, express yourself, and have new experiences.

And that’s exactly what I want to help you achieve with Spanish.

Want to get to know me better? On this page, you’ll find more information about me, my background, my experience with languages, and much more.

This way, you’ll get a good sense of who I am both personally and as a teacher.

MY JOURNEY WITH LANGUAGES

From studying languages to embracing them with enthusiasm

I was born and raised in Spain, where—at least when I was a child—it wasn’t very common to be exposed to other languages in a natural way.

Most movies, TV shows, and books were dubbed and translated, so exposure to other languages was almost always limited to the classroom.

Perhaps that’s why my relationship with languages wasn’t always easy. For years, I studied English in school the traditional way: grammar, vocabulary lists, and exercises.

Like many people, I was taught the language as a subject, not as a real tool for communication.

And that meant that for a long time, I saw it as a chore. I knew how to “study” English, but I didn’t know how to use it.

My grammar was good, but when I tried to talk to someone, the words wouldn’t come out of my mouth, or I simply didn’t understand people very well.

But this changed everything...

I knew I couldn’t go on like that, so I decided to try out some language exchange apps, with the goal of practicing more.

I was lucky enough to meet some very interesting people, and that’s where I discovered something that completely changed my perspective.

I realized that languages aren’t just for passing exams—they’re for connecting. Connecting with people, their culture, and their way of seeing the world.

At that moment, English stopped being a chore and became a tool—something useful, alive, and enjoyable.

At one point, I decided to spend some time in Ireland volunteering and studying at an English school in Dublin.

Today, I learn languages by integrating them into my daily life: watching TV shows, listening to music and podcasts, reading, and using them in real-life situations.

That’s how I learned Portuguese, and that’s how I continue to learn Italian. And that personal experience is a fundamental part of my teaching style.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching philosophy

My teaching approach is rooted in my own experience learning languages and everything I’ve discovered along the way. These are the principles that guide my classes and the way I support my students on their journey toward fluency.

100% communicative approach

In my classes, we start speaking from day one, because speaking is the hardest skill to practice on your own—and, at the same time, the one that builds the most confidence.

Just as it was for me when I was learning English, many of my students understand Spanish quite well but freeze up when it comes to speaking. My goal is to help you overcome that barrier and turn what you already know into real communication.

Microstep learning

I believe in taking things one step at a time, without rushing or obsessing over perfection. For me, learning a language is about building confidence, fluency, and naturalness little by little.

That’s why I work with specific goals and small steps—because I know that big results come from small victories. It’s a philosophy that guides both my classes and my own approach to learning languages.

Mistakes are part of the process

For me, making mistakes is an essential part of learning. After all, mistakes help us identify what we need to improve, so they’re key to making progress.

That’s why, in my classes, I create a judgment-free space where you can speak freely, make mistakes without feeling embarrassed, and feel comfortable using the language. Because confidence is essential for gaining fluency and expressing yourself naturally.

Authentic Spanish for everyday use

In class, we work with current events, personal experiences, discussions, and activities designed to promote spoken communication. The goal is to use the language in real-life situations: to express yourself, share ideas, and connect with others.

Research shows that when we practice with topics that interest and motivate us—and when we have fun and enjoy the process—learning is much more natural and effective. And that is exactly what we aim for.

MY PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

From digital marketing to Spanish teacher

My career didn’t start in teaching. I studied Business Administration and Management and then earned a master’s degree in Digital Marketing.

I worked for several years at marketing agencies. During that time, teaching Spanish was just a side gig—something I started “just to try it out.”

But what began as an experiment ended up becoming something much more important.

That’s why I decided to train as a teacher of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE), specializing in online teaching.

For me, teaching Spanish isn’t just about teaching a language; it’s also about sharing my love for Spain, its culture, its cuisine…

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

A little more about me

In addition to teaching Spanish, there are little things that are part of my daily life and that I especially enjoy. Here are a few of them.

I love traveling and experiencing each place in an authentic way, immersing myself in its culture, customs, and way of life. And if I can practice one of the languages I speak along the way, all the better!

Reading is another important part of my routine: I usually read several books at once, and I love using it as a way to keep learning, discover new ideas, and broaden my view of the world.

Music goes everywhere with me, and I have playlists in several languages—even in some I don’t speak or understand—as if I knew exactly what they were saying…😂.

And if there’s one thing that truly recharges me, it’s nature. I can’t choose between the sea or the mountains: I enjoy a hike just as much as a camping trip… I’m up for anything!

Would you like to practice with me?

If you want to stop just studying Spanish and start truly living it, I’d love to help you along the way. Book a 30-minute trial class now—it’s completely free and there’s no obligation.
